Go Ahead, Make Someone’s Day

November 4, 2013 Smiley Face in hands

As human beings, it’s our most fundamental need and desire to be seen.  Recognition and acknowledgement of our existence is the essential foundation upon which we build our self worth, self-perception and the life we make for ourselves.

As children, maybe we were shushed for speaking up at an inopportune time or sent away by adults who were too busy to play with us.  As teenagers, maybe we longed to be a part of the ‘in’ crowd who wouldn’t give us the time of day.  As adults, maybe we’ve worked for or with someone who would never consider our ideas because their way was the only way.

Such isolated incidents didn’t actually render us invisible; they only made us feel invisible.  But perception is only halfway to reality.  We have the power within our own hands to reshape that perspective, not only for ourselves, but also to help others do the same.

While we rely on other people to be seen and met exactly where we are, we each likewise possess the same ability to be the seer, to give the simple but empowering recognition we seek for ourselves.

Smile at a stranger.  Say good morning to your coworkers.  Greet your barista with the same enthusiasm you have for the cup o’Joe you’re about to hold in your hands.

Not only will you brighten someone else’s day, the generosity of your acknowledgement will pay itself back in spades because when we actively see another, we can’t help but be seen ourselves.
